What’s in your sandwich?
The humble sandwich. Something we eat often yet give little thought to.
Named after John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich, an eighteenth-century English aristocrat who is said to have ordered his valet to bring him meat tucked between two pieces of bread during a 24-hour gambling streak. As history goes, he was known to have instructed the cook to prepare his food in such a way that it would not interfere with his game and, as this meal could be eaten with one hand, it left the other free to continue the game – thus the perfect solution! Others then began to order “the same as Sandwich!” and so the sandwich as we know it was born.
Now we celebrate the sandwich as a staple part of our diet. Over 4,000,000,000 sandwiches are purchased in the UK every year with a spend of over £8,000,000,000 – that’s a lot of these bread filled delicacies! And, according to data from Kantar, bacon came out as our favourite filling (2017-2018), although chicken still remains the most popular choice in commercially made sandwiches accounting for around 31% of all retail sandwiches.
So what is a sandwich? The British Sandwich Association describes it as any form of bread with a filling, generally assembled cold including traditional wedge sandwiches, as well as filled rolls, baguettes, pitta, bloomers, wraps, bagels and similar. This doesn’t include burgers (but hot eating sandwiches are included).
