5 Christmas Day alternatives to turkey

We understand that some people find turkey a little dry, or perhaps it’s not their favourite meat. Well, don’t stick with it just for Christmas tradition! We’ve pulled together some of our favourite alternative recipes from various sources that may offer inspiration.

Brined roast goose with orange glaze

Goose was once the traditional bird of choice for Christmas Dinner before being replaced with the turkey. There are a few theories about why, with the most interesting blaming Charles Dickens…

Anyway, this recipe suggests you soak the goose in a brine and then baste it as it’s roasting. This brine is spiced with cardamom, cinnamon, and allspice, and the glaze is bursting with orange flavour.

Spiced with cardamom, cinnamon, and allspice – the brine is filled with festive spirit. The glaze is a combination of orange, marmalade, and white wine.

Stuffed, pancetta-wrapped saddle of venison with prunes and brioche

Now, this may sound odd, but bear with us, and this delicious parcel will be the family favourite every year. Best served with goose fat-covered roasties and red cabbage, this twist on festive feasts is a perfect little combination of meat and sweet, with its fruity filling.

Gammon slow cooked in Cola

If you haven’t heard of this before then we know, it sounds wrong. If you’ve ever tried this one before, you know it’s so right. Submerge the gammon joint in full-fat cola (the sugar is essential). Slow cook on high for 4 hours, then glaze and roast… it’s seriously mouth-watering stuff.
