6 ways to make your takeaways a little healthier
A lot of people tell themselves to cut out takeaways during January to lose that Christmas timber. We at PTG think that instead of cutting your favourite treats out completely is excessive, when instead you could just try slightly healthier options! So, we’ve put together some tasty but less fattening tips for 6 of the UK’s favourite takeaways.
Chinese
One of the nation’s favourites but famously unhealthy! There are ways to cut some of the calories and still enjoy your signature dishes. Firstly, try to void anything called “crispy” as that means it’s been deep-fried, you should also watch out for starters like prawn crackers and spring rolls for the same reason. Steamed dishes are the healthiest options, like dumplings, fish & crab, Szechuan Prawns, and chicken chop suey.
Fish & Chips
We all love a trip to the chippy and there’s no need to stop eating your favourites for good! But maybe occasionally try something a little healthier and see if you’re a fan. Firstly, if you can go for breadcrumbs over batter, you’ll be doing yourself a world of good. Also, the bigger the chip the better! Small fries absorb more fat. It sounds simple, but just sharing your portion of chips will go a long way too.
If you fancy something else to go with the fish and chips, opt for beans or mushy peas instead of high fat foods such as pies and sausages. Lastly, add the salt yourself. That way you have control and can go for a little less.
Italian
If you’re having pizza, try the lower-fat toppings for a change, including fish, prawns, ham or vegetables. You could even ask for extra veg on your pizza to pump up your daily fruit and veg intake.
For pasta dishes, it’s often as simple as going for a sauce that is tomato or vegetable based rather than cream and cheese. If you fancy a starter, why not try bruschetta over garlic bread? Just as tasty and it’s topped with fresh tomatoes and herbs instead of butter and cheese.
Thai
Go for stir-fried or steamed dishes containing chicken, fish or vegetables instead of the creamy, often coconut-based curries. Even opting for steamed rice over egg-fried rice will make a huge difference to your calorie intake. Try a clear soup such as a tom yum too, they’re delicious.
Kebab & Burgers
Doner kebabs are high in fat. For a healthier option, go for a shish kebab, which is a skewer with whole cuts of meat or fish and is usually grilled. If you’re having a burger, go for a regular, single-patty hamburger without the mayonnaise or cheese and have extra salad – try to avoid breaded or battered chicken or fish patties.
Indian
If you can avoid anything that is creamy or deep-fried, you’re off to a good start. Choose tomato-based sauce dishes such as a jalfrezi or madras, or tandoori-cooked meat, plain rice, or chapatti. Also go for plenty of veg, including lentil side dishes.
